DBE – Data Bank of Emotions; testing for the ability of fragrance to teleport us emotionally and psychologically.

In the time of deep space exploration becoming a reality and the conditions on our planet Earth making human life more difficult to sustain, setting up human bases (to investigate life from other perspectives and providing a context within which to perform various experiments) on the Moon and on the International Space Station are becoming not just a reality but also a necessity.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has included the fragrance DBE - A Message from Earth in the EMMIHS-III space research project. EMMIHS-III was the third EuroMoonMars analog mission at the International Moonbase Alliance base at HI-SEAS base in Hawaii, which took place from 18th January to 1st February 2020. The six-member expedition, led by scientist Marc Heemskerk, focused on sociological, psychological, biological, physical, and geological aspects. With the experiment, they strived to find out how the smell of DBE - A Message from Earth affects the emotions of participants.

The nomadic nature of humans, existing since the beginning of history and extending nowadays even into outer space, has been the main inspiration behind the DBE – Data Bank of Emotions collection of fragrances. With DBE we want to preserve and nurture the message from Earth even in deep space, and through its fragrance DBE- A MESSAGE FROM EARTH, we want to remain in touch with the Earthling in us, wherever we are

DBE - A Message from Earth shortlisted for a trip to the Moon in 2022!

We are pleased to announce that our project DBE - A Message from Earth, which was sprayed onto a cubic centimeter of soil during the EMMISH III lunar mission on HI-SEAS base in Hawaii in January 2020, has been added to the artifact pool of Moon Gallery. The artifacts, all candidates for a trip to the Moon in 2022, were presented at the Moon Gallery Garden in het Glazen Huis in Amstelpark, Amsterdam, from 6th June to 12th July 2020.

close cosmos

DBE - A Message from Earth exhibit at the Close Cosmos Moon Gallery and Ars Electronica Festival at Leiden University Observatory

"Close Cosmos" is a collective installation that looks close to ourselves and into the distant space. As beings, we stand between the microscope and the telescope, between our cells and the galaxies, under and above... These notions of extremes can give us purpose and help us answer the fundamental questions of life. Leiden University Observatory is the oldest observatory in the world still in operation, founded in 1633. This historical monument still plays an educational role for the University and the city of Leiden. "Close Cosmos" will display 36 micro-artifacts representing universal values and human aspirations, presented and materialized by the Moon Gallery artistsDBE - A Message from Earth, sprayed onto a cubic centimeter, is part of this exhibition, which will be on display from 12th September to 20th December 2020

DBE – Data Bank of Emotions – presented at the Vienna Workshop for Space Habitation

We are excited to share that DBE - Data bank of Emotions will be part of the Vienna Workshop for Space Habitation organized by the EuroMoonMars (EMM) @euromoonmars and hosted by the European Space Policy Insitute (ESPI) in Vienna Saturday, September 19th.

Besides presenting one of the materialized DBE fragrance (DBE has three versions: A Message from Earth, Empathy and Curiosity), also the back story of DBE will be presented in the context of having been inspired by Eva Petric’s  first visit of ESA - European Space Agency in 2015 where she was part of the moon simulation at ESTEC  and had the opportunity to experience deep space isolation. This experience presented her with the challenge of how to utilize art to combat feelings of isolation (especially experienced by astronauts). This resulted in the idea for the DBE- a data bank of emotions fragrance which would keep us company and activate the Earthling in us even if we were to find ourselves in deep space for longer periods of time.

You are welcome to explore with us; to watch and follow all the interesting discussions and presentations at the EuroMoonMars Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS2JTNYBywUvCgf-Dj6oIAw Sept 19th from 10:00-3:30CEST
